How JEE Advanced rank is calculated
JEE Advanced rank is assigned based on your aggregate score across Paper 1 and Paper 2. IIT Kanpur, which conducted JEE Advanced 2025, publishes an official rank list where candidates are ordered by their total marks out of 360. The rank you receive is your All India Rank (AIR) on the Common Rank List (CRL).
Candidates who meet subject-wise minimum qualifying marks are assigned a CRL rank. Separately, category-specific rank lists are generated for GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD candidates based on their scores within each pool. A candidate with a lower CRL rank may still hold a strong category rank — which is what matters during JoSAA counselling when reserved seats are allotted.
This predictor uses official IIT Kanpur 2025 score-to-rank anchor data with piecewise linear interpolation across 330+ data points, giving accurate estimates across all score ranges. Predictions are typically within ±10–15% of the actual rank.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this JEE Advanced rank predictor?
This predictor uses official IIT Kanpur 2025 score-to-rank data with piecewise linear interpolation across 330+ anchor points. For most score ranges, the predicted rank is within ±10–15% of the actual rank. Accuracy is highest between 100–300 marks where anchor points are densely spaced every 1–2 marks. Results may vary if JEE Advanced 2026 has significantly different paper difficulty.
What is the difference between AIR and category rank in JEE Advanced?
AIR (All India Rank) is your position on the Common Rank List among all qualified candidates, regardless of category. Category rank is your position within your specific pool — EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD. During JoSAA seat allotment, both ranks are used: your category rank determines access to reserved seats, while your AIR determines access to open/unreserved seats.
What score is needed to get a seat in an IIT?
Based on 2025 data, General category candidates typically need around 109 marks (approximately AIR 13,000) to secure any IIT seat. Top IITs like IIT Bombay CSE require scores well above 250. SC and ST candidates can secure IIT seats at lower absolute scores due to reserved seats and separate category cutoffs.
Can I use my JEE Advanced rank for NIT admissions?
No. NIT, IIIT, and GFTI admissions through JoSAA use your JEE Main rank, not your JEE Advanced rank. JEE Advanced rank is only used for IIT seat allotment. If you qualify both exams, JoSAA uses each rank for its respective set of institutes during the same counselling process.
What is the total number of seats in IITs through JEE Advanced?
IITs collectively offer approximately 17,000–18,000 seats across all branches and campuses. The exact number varies slightly each year as new IITs expand capacity. These seats are distributed across 23 IITs, with older IITs like IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, and Kharagpur typically having higher competition and requiring better ranks.
How is JEE Advanced 2026 different from JEE Advanced 2025?
JEE Advanced 2026 will be conducted by one of the older IITs on a rotational basis. The exam pattern (two papers of 3 hours each, 360 total marks) remains consistent year to year. The difficulty level varies between years, which is why our predictor applies a ±10–15% buffer — a harder paper shifts the entire rank list and a score of 180 may correspond to a better rank in a harder year than an easier one.
